LOCATION Lille, France
CLIENT City of Lille
SIZE 13.5 hectares
DESIGNED IN 2010-2011

In 2010 Will Alsop was shortlisted to design a landscape to unify the centre of the city of Lille. The site is a long strip defined by a canal hemmed in by surrounding large scale infrastructure. Alsop set out to reveal a new river for the city as a heart to build a linear park around. A series of sports and cultural activities are programmed out on a series of stages and in a series of public spaces along this riverside park.

The vision offers urban coherence enhancing the City and an ecosystem for a more sustainable city. The park re-introduces flora and fauna that has been lost over the years and uses passive techniques to oxygenate and clean the water and supply energy to the fountains and public lighting. The river brings together the different layers of the city and offers more continuity, opening up Lille's historic fortifications to the public. As a public space it is beautiful, healthy and recreational.
