project name

CLIENT Hamburg City, DFDS Seaways
SIZE 1,300 m2
YEAR 1993

This project was the first on which William Alsop and Jan Störmer collaborated and was the catalyst for a series of major projects in Germany.

At the root of the scheme was the need for an improved terminal serving North Sea ferry routes carrying both passengers and freight. Underlying it, however, was a wider agenda of docklands regeneration. The completed building is far more than a transport facility.

Over the terminal itself, office floors provide an exceptional working environment. The public also has access to fine views of the Elbe via a series of viewing areas. The building is a landmark exercise in renewal, but was achieved using relatively ordinary materials. It resembles a great ship, with the A-shaped pre-cast concrete columns supporting the upper levels providing a clear reference to derricks.
